The Champion Story: Consolidating the Best Talent
It began for Mary Margaret and me when we bought
Diversified Supplies in Waynesville, NC,
from Chris Connor in February 2002.
Seven years and four mergers later, we have the best janitorial supply expertise
of any company in our region.
When we bought Diversified Supplies, our oldest child
Olivia was one and our second of three children, Emma, was coming soon.
Mary Margaret focused on the success of our small but growing family
while I focused on the success of our small but growing business.
The best value we receive out of the purchase of Diversified Supplies is
Amy Presnell, our Office Manager.
She was, is, and will be the backbone of the company.
Amy and I worked hard and grew our business over 40% in two years.
Still, we were too small and did not have enough expertise and name
recognition to be a major player in our market.
2004 proved to be a key year for us.
In May, we purchased Champion Supply, a company with over 30 years
experience in the business. With
this acquisition we picked up Bill Robinson who is a fixture in our region with
over 40 years of experience and relationships in our region.
By August, the company was re-named Champion Supply and both operations
moved to our current location on Piney Park Road, just off Smoky Park Highway
in West Asheville.
Later in 2004, Mary Margaret made an even more impressive addition with
our son Charlie, born in October.
By 2006 we had a really strong company but lacked two key
elements – sales expertise and a strong internet presence.
We had hired a couple of sales people but they did not work out.
We had a web site but no traffic.
The perfect fit called me early in 2006.
I had talked to Bobby Johnson, owner of Johnson Supply in
Canton, NC, many times about joining our team.
In 2006, he agreed that the fit was right and it was time to merge.
Bobby has over 30 years experience in not only selling janitorial
supplies but also in being a contract cleaner.
Bobby knows how to clean every kind of facility first-hand.
Bobby is also an expert on the internet and was growing the strength of
his web site exponentially. We
consolidated the operation in West Asheville
and Bobby completed the coming together of our web sites.
